We have some fantastic news. The local Home Depot has given us an amazing donation for our King Cake Drawing.  We have in our possession a Brinkmann Dual Function 3-Burner Propane Gas / Charcoal Grill and Smoker.

Thank you Home Depot, and thank you to Home Depot’s store manager Curtis Gordon. Thank you, thank you.

This wonderful donation will be used as the prize for the King Cake Drawing.  If you are unfamiliar with the tradition of King Cake, checkout our King Cake page and get the details.

The basic idea is: eat some cake and if you find the baby inside you could be the very lucky winner of this smoker.  It’s that simple.

So, this Saturday night when you come to All Saints 19th Annual Mardi Gras Dinner and Dance, remember to wear your dancing shoes and a mask so you can be entered into the Mardi Gras Mask Drawing. Bring a little extra cash for the silent auction and the King and Queen Election and while you’re enjoying your dinner don’t forget to leave room for some King Cake.

All Saints Catholic School, Mardi Gras

The All Saints Mardi Gras has come to an end and even though it was a huge amount of work it was still a great time.  Many people and companies invested a great deal of time and energy in the months working up to the event and it showed.  Everyone enjoyed the wonderful food from Cattlemen’s Steak House and amazing music provided by Louis Najar.  As every event of this kind does, we had a few hiccups but nothing that couldn’t be remedied quickly and that just gives us a little more knowledge for next year.

Door prizes were given away, auction items were bid on and competed over, we ate King Cake, danced and after a tense election we even had a King and Queen crowned. Some would say that is enough but in the end this is a fundraiser and we were partying for the school (life is hard). After all the balloons were popped and the bills were paid, the All Saints Mardi Gras dinner and dance did pretty good. We can’t give out too many specifics but our King and Queen election generated over $630 and our silent auction produced over $4,000.  These two items combined with the sale of King Cake, masks, beads, boas and photos amounted to the best Mardi Gras fundraiser we have had to date.

Below is a photo of this year’s new King and Queen.  The election was started weeks before the Mardi Gras dance and finished that night.  After an intense election and a number of votes from the party guests the new royals were chosen.  Tommy and Candice Rincon were voted into their very auspicious position by some very generous people.  Their new royal standing has earned them a number gift certificates from around Roswell and two free passes into next years Mardi Gras.

A big thanks to the photographer of our Mardi Gras. The photo of our King and Queen was taken by a local photograph Jeff Neria and his team who have helped with the Mardi Gras dance for the last few years. Thank you so much Jeff.

With that we hope to see you at next years Mardi Gras Dinner and Dance.

God Bless.

A little update.

It’s a week later and its way past time for an update.

First of all a HUGE thanks to all of the sponsors, supporters and volunteers.  The entire event would crash and burn if not for all the help from the community. So, Thank You!

To the event.  About 300 people came to the All Saints Mardi Gras fundraiser and enjoyed some traditional Cajun style fair from Catlemans Steak House and some very good music from one of our founding supporters DJ Louis Najar.  It’s a pretty strong argument that without Mr. Najar there would be no Mardi Gras in Roswell. Eighteen years and still going.

The “fundraising” portion of the event went very well because of all of our amazing donations. Many of which from local artists.  Works from a friend of the school, David Blair, raised more than $200.  There was one piece from some local artists/fabricators that gathered quite a bit of attention.  Rincon and Son Fabrication custom-built a ‘disco grill’ and donated it to the event.

After a fair bidding war the disco grill generated about $250 for the school. We also had a number of other donations, including quilts, paintings, electronics, home improvement supplies, and a seemingly endless supply of gift certificates from all over Roswell as well as Ruidoso, Clovis and Portales.  Some of the gift certificates earned the winners everything from tire rotations to explosives.  There was even a year of burgers from a local restaurant.
You can checkout our sponsors on our donors page as well as along the left edge of this page.

It seems everyone had a great time eating, dancing and there was an occasional drink from the cash bar provided by Peppers Grill & Bar.  A few guests had more fun than others.  The winners of our door prizes went away with an assortment of items including gift baskets from Inspirations, a print from local artist David Blair, as well as certificates to a slew of local restaurants.  Our Mardi Gras Mask Drawing winner went home with an Imation Link video extender and even more gift certificates. That was just for bringing a mask to the party.

The winner of our King Cake Drawing won a $200 Nambe bowl and bottle of wine from our local winery. Pretty good for eating a piece of cake and finding a plastic baby.

Here are a few photo of the event.

We have great news!!
The King Cakes we will be using for our King Cake drawing will be partly sponsored by a local bakery. The Esparza Bakery will be baking our King Cakes this year which is a bit of a change for us.

In previous years the cakes had always been baked by volunteers and school parents.  The very much appreciated assistance with the cakes is going to take a lot of pressure off or our helping hands.  This also guarantees a comfortable hiding place for our very sought-after babies.

Remember we only have 12 babies and if you find one in your piece of King Cake you will be placed into a special drawing for a prize. Rumor has it that this years King Cake drawing prize is going to be great and if it’s anything like last years barbecue grill you might want to get your cake early.

Drawing, King Cake, Prize, tradition

Mardi Gras is an amazing compilation of celebration and religious tradition. The King Cake is one such tradition and All Saints Catholic School has taken that tradition and added a modern twist.

King Cake is named for the Three Wise Men, or Kings, who followed the guiding star and paid homage to Christ. The cake is a gift shared by family and friends that reminds us of the night and the gifts given by the Kings. It was later, that cake was brought forward to celebrate and give special “King” presents to children.

The oval-shaped cake is decorated in the three official colors of Mardi Gras: gold, green and purple. The gold color stands for power, the green color represents faith, and the purple is for justice. Traditionally each King Cake holds a tiny plastic baby and the lucky guest to receive the piece of cake with the baby inside is announced the King of the evening, and is obligated to host the next year’s party. But, you don’t have to worry about having to throw a Mardi Gras party. Here in Roswell, we like to do things a bit differently.

Sticking with tradition, we are still searching for the baby inside of the cake, but the rules have updated. We have twelve cakes now, each possessing one tiny plastic baby inside. If you are lucky enough to find a baby in your slice of cake your name will be placed in a drawing along with the names of the guests who also found babies. Once all of the babies have been located a drawing of the twelve names will be held and a single prize winner will be named.

We are gathering new donations ever day and have not decided on a grand prize yet but, previous  winners of the King Cake drawing have received a trip for two to Ruidoso with accommodations at a private cabin and multiple gift certificates to local restaurants.  Last year’s winner took home a brand new stainless steel barbecue grill donated by Home Depot.  Those are not bad prizes for eating a piece of cake, so come treat yourself with this sweet delight and get your chance to win a “royal” prize.

Guests will have the opportunity to purchase a slice of cake for $5.00 in the hopes to finding one of the twelve babies and a chance at the grand prize.
