Get Ready for King Cake

Mardi Gras is an amazing compilation of celebration and religious tradition. The King Cake is one such tradition and All Saints Catholic School has taken that tradition and added a modern twist.

King Cake is named for the Three Wise Men, or Kings, who followed the guiding star and paid homage to Christ. The cake is a gift shared by family and friends that reminds us of the night and the gifts given by the Kings. It was later, that cake was brought forward to celebrate and give special “King” presents to children.

The oval-shaped cake is decorated in the three official colors of Mardi Gras: gold, green and purple. The gold color stands for power, the green color represents faith, and the purple is for justice. Traditionally each King Cake holds a tiny plastic baby and the lucky guest to receive the piece of cake with the baby inside is announced the King of the evening, and is obligated to host the next year’s party. But, you don’t have to worry about having to throw a Mardi Gras party. Here in Roswell, we like to do things a bit differently.

Sticking with tradition, we are still searching for the baby inside of the cake, but the rules have updated. We have twelve cakes now, each possessing one tiny plastic baby inside. If you are lucky enough to find a baby in your slice of cake your name will be placed in a drawing along with the names of the guests who also found babies. Once all of the babies have been located a drawing of the twelve names will be held and a single prize winner will be named.

We are gathering new donations ever day and have not decided on a grand prize yet but, previous  winners of the King Cake drawing have received a trip for two to Ruidoso with accommodations at a private cabin and multiple gift certificates to local restaurants.  Last year’s winner took home a brand new stainless steel barbecue grill donated by Home Depot.  Those are not bad prizes for eating a piece of cake, so come treat yourself with this sweet delight and get your chance to win a “royal” prize.

Guests will have the opportunity to purchase a slice of cake for $5.00 in the hopes to finding one of the twelve babies and a chance at the grand prize.

As you know this type of event hinges on donations and gifts, and the willingness of the community to provide these.  Well, we have good news. Some of the local businesses have already come thru with some extreme generosity.

For starters, Amy’s Fireworks has delivered a few very nice pieces.  One of which is a beautiful wooden desk.  So you may want to keep an eye out for that while you are looking thru the silent auction room on February 18th.

One of the other items that has been donated is a bit more techy.  Twincorner Art & Design has donated an Imation Link Video Extender. What is that exactly? The Imation Link makes it possible for you to display your laptop screen onto you HD television.  Pretty cool! Take a look at the video for a little more info and maybe you can get the real thing at Mardi Gras.

We may use the Imation Link as the prize for the mask and costume drawing. Remember if you come to Mardi Gras with your Mardi Gras mask or in costume you will be automatically entered into the drawing.

Those are not the only donations we have and they certainly won’t be the last. We have also been given a beautiful print from the local artist Paul Drum and we typically receive a piece of jewelry or work of art from one of the local jewelers.

Keep checking back and we’ll keep updating.

The election is under way!

Every year we have an election/fund-raiser to find the new Mardi Gras King and Queen.  This year we are changing it up just a little bit.  To improve on the “fund-rasing” portion of the event we have expanded the time frame and area for voting.  In previous years the only opportunity to nominate and vote for a couple was during the Mardi Gras dance. For this year’s election we will be asking for donations as well as placing nomination envelopes and ballot boxes in the backs of all three of the local parishes.

We have already started the race and have a few couples on the chart.  Even though they have a small head start it would be easy for a new contender to jump into the mix.

Below is the pie chart with the nominated couples and their current election rankings.  If you would like to get someones name in the running you can make a nomination and vote/donation All Saints Catholic School or at any of the local Catholic parishes.

Dont forget to keep up to date on the rankings by going to our “King and Queen Election” page.  It will also show more information on how and where to make nominations and votes.

Welcome to the All Saints Catholic School Mardi Gras Website

You will find everything you will need to know about the upcoming event on Saturday, Feb. 18th 2012.  We don’t have a lot of information up yet but that will all change as time goes on.  The All Saints Mardi Gras Dinner and Dance is a fundraiser planned and coordinated through the efforts of All Saints Catholic School of Roswell school board and parent volunteers.

Every year the event gathers quite a crowd of school supporters and Mardi Gras enthusiasts.  The crowd is for good reason, we don’t only have excellent food, a cash bar and amazing music from DJ Express (Louis Najar), you can also find some major bargains in our silent auction. Everything in our auction is donated by local artists and businesses, or purchased and donated by private individuals who wish to support the school.  You can also have your photo taken by a local photographer, enjoy some traditional King’s Cake for a chance to win a prize, and there are still beads and door prizes.

Don’t forget,  Mardi Gras is all about the “LOOK”. Show up in your mask and/or costume and you have a chance at winning some special door prizes.  Our special prizes are only for those who come dressed for the occasion.

Tickets will be on sale soon and you can pick them up at the All Saints Catholic School office at 2700 North Kentucky Avenue Roswell, NM 88201-5814 for $35.00 per person.

More information will be posted soon and often.  Check back to see some of the possible door prizes and silent auction items.

If you are interested in purchasing a full table for your business or family you can call the school office (575) 627-5744 and we can coordinate a ticket delivery.
